About
EK Modena is a variable superfamily inspired by the geometry of the superellipse, balancing curves and edges within a consistent structural framework. Spanning multiple widths and weights, the family is designed to function coherently across large typographic systems. Its restrained character and broad design space make it suitable for complex, long-term applications.

The focus radiates out from the core of the standard proportions. From top to bottom the widths increase, and from left to right come the italics and the monospaced styles.
Except for the mono, the Modena families’ weights are evenly and consistently spread across the entire weight axis.
Careful consideration led to a clearly defined design space of six widths (y-axis) at eight weights (x-axis).
Anatomy of Modena exemplified in the capital O: an increase of the plateaus from expanded (1), extended (2) and Modena’s normal width (3) to condensed (4), compressed (5) and super compressed (6)
The many faces of Modena, from left to right: super compressed, ‘normal’, italic (oblique), mono-spaced and expanded.
Comparison between the super-compressed and expanded widths of the heaviest ultra-bold weight of Modena reveals a significant weight-loss.
The italics in Modena are obliques and feature both the double storey ‘a’ as well as the iconic schoolbook ‘a’.
In order to preserve the characteristic shapes between proportional and monospaced styles, some letters remain unchanged.
Stylistic Alternates
The Space S of Modena Bold Super Compressed (Stylistic Set 3) compared to default version.
Several stylistic alternates included in Modena transform closed shapes to open ones and can quickly change the face’s overall appearance.
The circled figures are available as both negative (filled) and positive (outlined) variants. Their size and weight have been adapted to the cap forms.
In the monospaced version, the circled numerals are double-width and the circle follows the standard numeral outline without scaling the numeral down.
Character Set is supporting 219 latin based languages, which are spoken in different 212 countries and various OpenType Features.
