About Modena
EK Modena is a variable superfamily inspired by the shape of a super-ellipse. It follows the concept of fitting an oval shape into a square frame, creating a unique balance of curves and edges. Early explorations of this structural tension in letterforms appeared in Italian type designs of the late 1930s. Alessandro Butti first developed this “squaring of curves” approach, later expanded by Aldo Novarese with lowercase and condensed styles, leading to the creation of the Eurostile typeface in 1962.
EK Modena reinterprets this principle with a fresh perspective. The curves are softened, offering a more refined and contemporary approach to the original concept. The family includes a wide range of styles across six widths and eight weights. The upright forms are complemented by selected italic versions as well as monospace styles, enhancing its versatility. Numerous OpenType features provide a wealth of stylistic alternates, allowing for extensive customization.
From compressed headline styles to proper widths for long copy and sturdy shapes, EK Modena’s wide and colorful design space provides a visual bouquet of applications.
